With 260 institutes in nine faculties, RWTH Aachen University is one of Europe's leading institutions for science and research. Currently around 31,400 students are enrolled in over 100 academic projects. Work conducted in the research centres at RWTH Aachen is strongly oriented toward the current needs of industry, commerce, and the professions. The individual competence centres at RWTH Aachen collaborate very effectively across departments and faculties in interdisciplinary groups and forums, while still maintaining a strong focus on their own department specialisation. A competence centre formed between the MTU Aero Engines Company and the RWTH laboratories IST and WZL, is collaborating on LEMCOTEC. IST (Institute of Jet Propulsion and Turbomachinery) specialises in numerical simulations and experimental testing of compressor, turbine or cascade rigs. WZL (Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering) focuses on machine tools/ assembly technologies, production system and management, manufacturing and gear technology, and production metrology and quality management.
IST assesses numerically the the optimum aspect ratio and spacing by subsequently designing, manufacturing and experimentally investigating different configurations in a multi-stage environment. WZL focuses on enabling cost effective manufacture of compressor parts for high OPR compressors.
